The fact that employment grew by 50,000 between 2007 and 2012 while GDP fell by 2.6% has attracted considerable attention in the UK. Why, commentators ask, do we have more people in work, but are producing less? The main reason is that more people are working part-time. Between 2007 and 2012, the number of full-time workers fell by 475,000, while number of part-time workers rose by 512,000. The UK now has around 1 million workers in the UK who are under-employed, i.e. working fewer hours than they would like. This report also examines changes within sectors and occupational roles.
